27 APS Airman gets President's feet on the ground

MINNEAPOLIS ST PAUL AIR RESERVE STATION --  When the president comes to town, most attention centers on him and his itinerary. Here at the 934th Airlift Wing, presidential visits are nothing new. But to some of the people on base, these visits offer a unique and memorable experience.

Tech. Sgt. Scott R. Tammen, of the 27th Aerial Port Squadron, experienced President Obama's arrival and departure during his most recent visit to Minneapolis. As a full-time Air Reserve Technician and the Lead Aerial Delivery NCO/ Vehicle Control Officer for material handling equipment, Sergeant Tammen was chosen to represent his squadron, and the 934th Airlift Wing, during the President's visit.

Sergeant Tammen was responsible for "stepping the plane"--that is, driving the mobile staircase up to Air Force One--upon the arrival and departure of Air Force One. "It was a privilege, a very unique experience getting to step Air Force One," he said. Sergeant Tammen said his favorite part of the experience was working with the Air Force advance team. "They were really nice guys, easy to work with and very organized. Seeing the plane up close was amazing as well since it is such a national symbol."
Since he was able to work with the advance team ahead of President Obama's arrival, Sergeant Tammen had the measurements of the loft-a-lift to Air Force One already preset, eliminating the need for major adjustments on the flightline.

Tech. Sergeant Phil Velasco, also of the 27th APS, accompanied Sergeant Tammen. Sergeant Velasco, a ramp service specialist, said this was his third experience with a presidential visit and the experience is always great. "Seeing different agencies come together for such a big event is always a thrill," he said.
