First Reserve/Air National Guard command post becomes operational Published Oct. 2, 2008 By Master Sgt. Paul Zadach 934th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Minneapolis-St. Paul -- In a small ceremony Oct. 1, the 934th Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve, and the 133rd Airlift Wing, Air National Guard, established a first-of-its-kind joint command post which will serve both wings and replace their formerly separate facilities. The joint command post is the first to combine an Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard command post functions into one facility. Its function is to maintain command and control of aircraft and personnel and to coordinate any emergency actions when necessary. "A big advantage to the joint command post is the synergy that is created by combining resources," said Col. Tim Tarchick, 934th Airlift Wing commander. "It is efficient and it makes sense to have one base and one command post." The process of joining the two facilities began about 18 months ago when an Air Force level directive ordered individual command posts to combine. Shortly after the directive was received, Reserve controllers coordinated efforts with their counterparts in the Guard wing and AFRC headquarters. That led to further coordination between the commanders of the two wings to work on goals and policies between the two wings. "The simple fact that we are working together in many areas makes a pretty big statement," said Col. Greg Haase, 133rd Airlift Wing commander. "In today's ever changing landscape of the Air Force, Guard and Reserve we will constantly create innovative, creative ways to move forward and create efficiencies in the way we work."
