The civilian employers of 37 reservists toured the base as part of the 934th Airlift Wing's Employer's Day Aug. 6, an annual event hosted by the local Employer's Support of the Guard and Reserve office.

Some employers traveled hundreds of miles to participate.

They were treated to a continental breakfast, a briefing about the unit's history and mission, a security forces weapons demonstration, and a two-hour flight on a C-130. The employers then met with their individual reservists for a visit to their respective work centers.

"I appreciated seeing what she does. I was introduced into a world I had not been exposed to before. It was wonderful," said Breta Monroe, a nurse practitioner at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Her reservist is Maj. Michelle Thein, the annual tours officer-in-charge for the 934th Aeromedical Staging Squadron. "I always wondered what her weekend looked like when she went to her drills. Now I know."

Monroe also came away with information that helps her understand her job a little better. When touring the security forces squadron's equipment room, she was introduced to body armor and some of the other equipment that military personnel wear while on duty.

"Now I understand where the complaints of back pain come from. It's the wear and tear on your body from the weight of the equipment. It was interesting," Monroe said.

Ben Mattson was impressed with the security forces demonstration and the C-130 flight.

"I loved shooting the guns and at the bad guys in the simulator. That was cool," he said. "During the C-130 flight, I was in the cockpit when we went over Duluth. We flew over the Duluth Lift Bridge at a low altitude. That was wonderful."

The 934AW and ESGR hosts Employer's Day every year.  Reservists can sign up their employers by contacting the public affairs office.
